Three years on, Indian Railways' passenger traffic remains below pre-pandemic numbers

India's railway network has suffered a 24% drop in passenger traffic during the current fiscal year compared to pre-pandemic level in 2019-20. The data for 2022-23 until February shows an 18,150 lakh decrease compared to the same period in 2019-20. The numbers, derived from the Railways' monthly evaluation report, highlight the biggest declines occurring in Western, Central, and Eastern zones. Additionally, passenger traffic in northern India through Delhi has significantly decreased, while suburban and non-suburban transport have seen a 20% drop and a 29% drop, respectively, compared to 2019-20.
